Mama's Encounter With The Devil

Hello Everyone!

Thanks for visiting today! This is another story my mama told me of her childhood adventures.

Growing up in rural North Carolina during the 1920's, my mama was the middle child of three girls. They lived right across the road from the church they attended all their life. I've heard many thrilling stories of the church services, activities and community "gatherings" she attended as a child. She told me they were at the church "every time the door was open." Now, that's dedication!

Her parents were devout and their children were raised to follow the ways of Christ. Mama said "I knew there was a devil, because I learned about him in church, but, I had never seen him." Now, for a child, other that what the Bible says, she had no idea of what he looked like. That is where that "little girl imagination" comes in.

One day, she and her sisters were playing outside, possible in their "pretend" playhouse under the grapevine arbor. As they were playing, they began to hear, in the distance - coming down the dirt road a loud roaring noise. As it got closer, they could see a huge, horrible looking creature which Mama, recognized immediately, as "the Devil." She grabbed her two sisters and went screaming into the house where their mama calmed their fears.

Upon further investigation, "the Devil" was a huge road scraper machine that came by cleaning out the ditches along the dirt road. Mama's "little girl imagination" got the better of her that day, but she practiced, in her childlike way, what we are supposed to do when we encounter evil - run from it! "Resist the devil and he will flee" James 4:7 (my paraphrase)

I hope you enjoyed this story my Mama told me of her childhood. Stay tuned for more.

Hello Plant Lady,

I really like your stories, it's wonderful to remember our Mother's.
My Grandfather (Mom's Dad) was a Southern Baptist Minister and Mom told us about the all-day Tent Revivals they would have. She said they would go in the morning for singing and preaching and then lunch would be outside, a big pitch-in, then the children would play while the adults would visit, then back in the tent for more preaching and singing, she loved it. What a way to Worship our great Creator!

Psalm 91:1 "He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the Shadow of the Almighty", I believe God's secret place is His heart, know that you dwell there because He loves You.

God Bless, Josie

Dear friend,
It is a very scary thing to feel out of control in any area of our life. I struggle so much at times like this. I know that these are the times that God prepares us for. To trust in Him that He is good enough for us and to have the faith that He is.
So much like the story we read about Deborah today. Knowing God as her savior and protecter how did that look to her at the time, a mere woman, and how does that look to you and to me today? Scary but God did not give us a spirit of timidity but a spirit of power, and self discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7.
Today I pray that spirit of POWER, LOVE and SELF DISCIPLINE over you Plant Lady.
God bless you

Plant Lady,
Although I haven't posted any comments in several days, I usually read your devotional first. I truly enjoy it. When I didn't find one today I wondered if everything was OK. Then I see that one of the readers hoped you are feeling better. Have you been "under the weather?"

May the Lord bless you as you are a blessing! I'll be watching for your next "Plant Lady's Ponderings"

Josie,
I, too, remember Mama telling me of such services years ago. They had great fun and worship during these revivals. Sometimes, my grandma and grandaddy would "house" the visiting evangelist, so Mama said.

Thanks for the scripture!

Love,
Plant Lady
